This game was a nice surprise. With lower budget Indie Visual Novels, you never really know what to expect. Lighthouse is a charming title, with lovely music, some wonderful artwork and a compelling narrative. This should only take you about 5 or 6 hours to complete, but I left feeling completely satisfied.
The characters are delightful and there are some fun and silly scenes, but also a darker plot that slowly comes to light, as well as multiple endings that are all pretty in depth. The world feels deeper than I’d expect from a short title like this, and I think there’s plenty of material left for a sequel.
The first time you play the game, you actually go through the story in reverse, one day at a time, starting on Day 12, and then 11, etc. This is an unusual and memorable way to begin the narrative, but it works, and when you reach the end…. Or the beginning in this case, you can then play the game in the proper order. Now you’re able to make choices, see more detailed renditions of events, and send the story in different directions.
The main problem I had with this release is the grammar. The writing is actually very good, it flows well and the characters are interesting. But there are tons and tons of spelling and grammatical errors. I don’t know if there were time constraints, but it definitely felt like someone was in a hurry at some point during the localization process. But to me, the other aspects of the game more than make up for it.

This was a fantastic game! It was so wholesome and I would play it again! It had a nice story and was exciting, too.

The art and music are really pretty but the way the story works (kinetic novel into visual novel) isn't a lot of fun and you'll spend an hour waiting to play the actual game.

I've been wanting to buy this game for a long one, and I honestly should've done that sooner. Despite a high number of spelling and grammatical errors, I can't complain about anything else. An interesting tale with an unconventional narrative, it can easily pull you into the disparaging situation that the main character faces.

This review contain some spoilers. Because it hard to told about game without spoil it main feature.
In short this a dark fairytale about family, responsibility, homicide, religious conscience of different culture and a lot of tasty tea.
A bit longer:
Story itself is pretty simple. But the strongest part of this game is how it is told. After you will think about how this game ending is short and edgy, story will really start and turn the tables about your perception of characters. Not about Asteban, tho. He is the only constant in this world along with his magic Lighthouse.
You should definitely try it.

Young Ethani finds herself washed up on unfamiliar shore. There is a Lighthouse, a beacon for those who have lost their way, its Keeper tells her. What happened to Ethani? And will she find her way after leaving this mystical place?
I liked...

The concept (the story is first told backwards as a kinetic novel, and then from the beginning, where the player can try and reach a better outcome—I really enjoyed that)

The choices (Ethani has some tough decisions to make, which keep the story interesting; also the game overall is easy to navigate, since you can see in which direction each choice leads)

The characters

The art and music

I didn't care for...

The tonal shifts (at times, the game drops into chibi comedic scenes or grimdark tragic teritorry, with little subtlety)

The leaps of logic (a few plot points just don't feel very realistic, in my opinion)

Verdict
The melancholic Lighthouse of Guiding Flames is not the perfect visual novel, but it's an interesting one. The story can take you in very different directions depending on what choices you make, and some flaws of the plot do not take away from the message or overall experience. Recommended.

An enjoyable visual novel about a girl trying to do what's right versus what's expected of her. The characters are pleasing to look at, the chibi CGs are cute and there are plenty of great CGs as well. Definitely make sure to read it forwards after reading it backwards to fill in a lot of holes.
Beware that there are a lot of typos here. If I had to guess on average, there are 1-2 per 10-15 screens. It's not enough to really distract you from the story, but it is quite annoying to see just how many there are.

A surprisingly interesting little VN that offered something I don't typically get from VNs this size. A good, unique story that doesn't overstay its welcome. Only downside is this VN could REALLY use a copyeditor - the writing overall is good and competent, but there are tons of syntax errors ('and' is 'abd', 'a lot' becomes 'al ot', etc) that a copyeditor would catch. Doesn't hinder the story, but does take a layer of polish away from an otherwise hidden gem!

Lighthouse of guiding flames is a visual novel about a girl named Ethani who lost her way and ended up at the lighthouse, a place where the time doesn't exist and travellers end up arriving at when they need the time to figure out their way.
This is a pretty nice little story about self-discovery and understanding the feelings of others, made through the various choices, which affect the outcome of Ethani's fate. When she arrives at the lighthouse she doesn't quite remember who she is, why she ended up at the lighthouse and where was she going. On the first playthrough you get to learn a little by reading in inverted order, when it's done you can start from day one and actually make choices which will determine the outcome of Ethani's story and if she manages to overcome the cruel fate that awaits her back in her world.
Summary:
- Decent fantasy story, which is at times twisted, depends on what ending you're playing through.
- [strike]Writing is fine, but the whole game is riddled with typos and at least one line of untranslated text. Not a huge flaw, as it's still understandable, but be warned that it's not perfect either.[/strike] Developers updated the game, so writing should be alright now.
- Multiple endings.
- 12 funny short side stories in extras to read after completing the game.
- Artwork is really gorgeous, chibi variations are really cute.
- There are a few cases of bloody/disturbing imagery.
- Nice soundtrack.
Overall, I recommend this for a short fantasy read.

Lighthouse of guiding flames is a fantasy visual novel with mystery and horror elements. It features the female protagonist Ethani who, over the course of 12 days, tells her story where she is chosen as a human sacrifice to appease a vengeful god in her remote village, goes to a lighthouse run by the keeper Astaban, meets a few people, and moves on in her life (or afterlife).
The story starts off slow at first as it recounts Ethani's story backwards from day 12 to 1. Then it gets better in the second part where her story is told from day 1 to day 12, and the player gets to choose various dialogue options leading to several different endings. I like the part where each choice towards a specific route has a special colour to help players reach that ending (yellow for run away, orange for fight, and red for accept fate). There also is a compass icon that will show the player's inclination towards a particular route and ending. And finally there is a published community guide to help players get all endings and achievements. In terms of artwork, it has a variety of nice, cute, and spooky CGs. The background music is good and appropriate for most of the scenes. I especially like Timeless shore, Endless minute, and Guiding flame for the fantasy themes, as well as I'll save you during the good endings as they feel rewarding.
There are a few cons though. I have come across a number of spelling errors during my playthrough in which some of them completely change the meaning, which detracts from the experience, although some of the patch note announcements have reported that the developer and translators are fixing them. In addition, none of the endings truly feel satisfying in the sense that there is no perfect ending. The hardest ending and achievement Persistence Lights the Way can be difficult to figure out without referring to the guide, and it feels more disappointing than satisfying after attempting multiple playthroughs of the game.
Lastly, I purchased the soundtrack DLC on Steam but was disappointed to receive a blank folder and Steam music player wouldn't play any of the BGM. Hopefully, the developer can address this major fault sometime in the future.
After spending around 3 hours to get all endings and achievements, Lighthouse of guiding flames is an interesting supernatural visual novel with plenty of background music and artwork at a reasonable price, although with a few faults. Therefore, I can recommend this game when it is at a discount to be more proportional to the playing time, or when the English translation is improved. With that being said, I do not recommend buying the soundtrack DLC on Steam until this major fault is addressed.
Recent updates
The developer has patched the game on July 2022 and June 2024 to improve the English subtitles and make the soundtracks available again to those who purchased the soundtrack DLC on Steam.
