Ash Asylum Reviews

In Ash Asylum you play an amnesiac thrust into a morbid, really creepy universe. After an accident you wake up to find that instead of lying in a hospital, you’re in an asylum with your head wrapped in bandages. Who the hell am I? What am I doing here? How do I escape?

A bit disappointed. The game is too short and there's a lot of bugs.

Terrible, glitchy, stupid and random story. Item management is annoying and getting stuck in boxes at the beginning makes it not worthwhile. Should be freeware.

the bugs and glitches that old reviews are talking about i didn't encounter so mostlikely the dev got rid of them with updates over time, which makes sense since it's been a hot minute since those reviews... considering the game is hella cheap it's definitely worth a shot. it's your typical jumpscare horror game and nothing too special but it keeps you busy. i'm stuck in chapter 2 because i keep dying because i have low health but there are no extra painkillers to be found anywhere so i'm assuming i must have missed some bottles in the first chapter or this is the one bug/glitch i experienced (because i'm sure i always check everything thoroughly before leaving and i didn't find more than 1 bottle) and although the game is kinda okay to play, it isn't worth going through the whole first chapter again to check it so i can continue the game. so for now at least, i'm done but who knows i might try again in the future.

So far it's pretty decent! I've only played through a little bit so far but honestly I would recommend it for the hilarious object physics alone. It's appropriately spooky, if not cliche. So long as you go into it expecting what you paid you won't be disappointed. If you want to check it out before trying it yourself I have a link to the first episode of my let's play below. Happy spooking! https://youtu.be/sXzGHpwfTk4 **When I first made this review I didn't realize that this was early access AND from a new developer with only one other game under their belt. With that in mind I definitely recommend the game--the devs add updates based on the feedback from the players which I think is fantastic.

I won't say whether or not I recommend at this point, as it's still in early access. The game frequently lags to the point of becoming nearly unresponsive, leaving me more annoyed than anything else. The controls seem most geared towards keyboard and mouse, but as someone using a Dvorak keyboard layout I need the option to customize controls in order to play the game that way. I don't know if the inability to remap keys is a shortcoming of the engine or something the developers did not know how to implement or simply didn't consider implementing. I will wait for the completed release and see how things go from here, I hope these technical issues are dealt with. ----- Edit in response to the developer: Thank you for responding. I'm running the windows version of the game, with an Intel i7 processor (3.33 GHz), 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 770. I've never messed with video capture, but the lag issue was a bizarrely specific thing that kept repeating - the inventory became slow to load at points, as well as rotating. Forward/Backward/Strafing movements all seemed unaffected, however.

This game has not been updated for a long time now... The bare bones are there, but this type of game has been done so many times before... Also, you get hit and die out of nowhere? What is the deal? In the current state not recommended. Go play Outlast instead.
Ash Asylum is a game I'm refunding, but not out of anger

I played this game twice and I can't even remember how it starts, it's a bland mess of free assets that I've seen time and time and time again, but that's not the problem at all, I would have kept it in my library and played it through and considered it an inoffensive asset flip, but I just can't do that. I hate refunding games, and I'll only do it if they don't work
Ash Asylum works fine until it doesn't, and the only reason I started from the beginning again was to play the game with a friend. I'm not gonna bother talking smack about the assets or story or anything like that cos other people already have and that's not the point of this review. The game is harmless and works fine up until a certain area near the halfway point. The game says its a "survival horror" game but there's nothing out to get you, (from what I played at least). you can get hurt but the damage is dealt via ineffective jump-scares. I found a single health pickup that gave me a 20% hp increase from 10%-30%. Could I have done something to stop myself from getting hurt? I have no clue, as the game doesn't tell the player anything about that so I highly doubt the mechanics are built in. Anyhow, bad scares ensued and I eventually died, which made me relieved, surely I'd respawn with full HP? no lol I scoured every area I could at 30% health for some sort of pickup but sadly i could find none. The game effectively soft-locks the player in an irritating death loop and it really really bugged me for some reason. let me know if you add more health pickups! I'd definitely come back and finish this title if you did, just so I can get the achievements. For now though, I can't recommend a broken game, especially considering I paid money for it, (a small amount albeit, but money nonetheless.)

Ash Asylum is bare bones but can be a great game with a good story. I have beat the current version of the game which I ran into a very annoying bug. The diary needs some work as in chapter two it was stuck on find a key. I reloaded my save from chapter 1 which resulted in the diary being stuck on take photos. After an hour and a half I was finally able to complete the chapter after a lot of guessing. I will recommend this game as of now since it is in EA and can be worked on via supporting the developer with getting the game. To the Developer: Keep it up and let's see this go somewhere!
