A fun card game in the same vein as Slay the Spire. I highly recommend if your into this type of game. I find it fun when I don't have much time to hop on and do a few battles and hop off between tasks during the day.

Amazing game BUT there's little reason to buy this over the sequel, which is better in every single way.
If you can get this at a deep discount, then sure. Otherwise, buy Monster Train 2 instead!

Oh my, this game is so much fun. I know I'm late to the party, and I know the sequel is already out, but I am in no rush to move on from this. A lovely, turn-based card battler, with no time pressures at all. Superb graphics, music and overall atmosphere. Losing to the final boss is a pain, after working so hard to get there, but as with all of these types of games, you still get XP when you lose, you continue to level up, and future runs become easier. The new cards you unlock as you progress keep things fresh, and honestly it's just a joy to play for an hour or so each time I have an evening free :)

Monster Train - 100% Completed Review
Score: 8/10
The Road to Hell is Paved With.. Railroad Tracks Apparently
Overall Monster Train was a fun but short game about fighting Angels on a Hell Train with a deck of cards, certainly a unique idea that's for sure, but one that works, it was quite a fun game and has lots of replayability, just good ol' fashion game to play for fun and to pass the time, i wouldn't pay full price for it given how short the game is but it's definitely worth it on sale, but as always, It's.. Up.. To.. You, and i'll leave it at that (^_−).

Very enjoyable game.
Finding a good build is a bit hard at first but once you find one it can be very fun (and broken).
I have this on the switch as well and find it to be one of my go to games to kill time. It is nice you can drop a run and pick it up later if you dont have the 20-35 minutes a run usually takes to complete.
Overall id give this a solid 7/10

This is an immediate buy if you like the genre. I'm 25hrs in and still happy to play more! The variety between the different decks and their play styles is really impressive, especially once you factor in the two-deck-per-run format which allows for so much experimentation and deck-building. I can honestly say that I like almost every combination of deck you can make, which is wild because of how different all the styles all. I haven't played the sequel yet, and that's what makes this game so great for me: people are saying the sequel is even better and I'm wondering... how? This game rocks! The sequel is BETTER than this? Damn. I'm happy with this! Honestly, the progression is really good, the game feels quite hard at first but then opens up as you learn the strategy and contend with the unique (and interesting) design of having to balance where your units go on each floor, then if you want the game to get harder again there's tonnes of added difficulty (I got five levels deep into the extra difficulty and had enough but there's much more if you want), the graphics are good, the card designs, names and art are incredible... Legit 10/10. If the shop owner didn't have such an annoying voice, it would be a perfect game! Seriously, if you like games like this, just buy it.

Slay the Spire walked so that Monster Train could run. Or barrel down the tracks at high speed with incredible variety of deck building techniques, unique and stylized non-combat encounters and shops, and cards full of creativity and just enough oomph to allow you to break the game if you get the right combo and have the right strategy. Peak rogue-lite deck building. Can't wait to play the sequel, but glad I picked the original up on the cheap, as I may never have tried it since the graphics looked like a cheap phone game. It is so much better than it looked.

While I think the sequel is improved in almost every aspect, this game still holds up and is worth playing.

Looking for a slay the spire styled card battler but with some problems like weird balancing, sometimes you will be super overpowered.. every enemies and every bosses got destroyed easily, and sometimes the enemies counter you with some bullsh*t buff / boss gimmick / insane amount of health? well let's discuss it as a bit shall we?
(or if you want to know if I really recommended it or not you could find it at the bottom of this review.)
Why do I think so?
In this game, you can upgrade your spell like you start of with damage card that deals 2 damage and you upgraded it with +10 damage for example. Yeah, it would be perfect at the starts of your run but kinda loses its purpose on the late game due to enemy became more tanky. Sure, let's say it's the game intention because we need to strategically plan it wisely enough for now. This game also can upgrade your units so they could attack multiple times in a turn or they would strike first, or have their base health and/or damage increased. It would work, but the effect is only effectively shine on those unit that already have a passive or insane base health/damage to begin with. Meaning, you could've increase a creature with 1 damage & 1 health to 20 damage & 20 health for example but the resource that you use to upgrade that unit would be better if it goes to the unit with a good stat / passives like I said before.
So at this point, you could've see that only a SPECIFIC UNITS / SPELLS works better with a SPECIFIC UPGRADES. But wait, there is clans. And different clans came out with a leader and units with their clan's own unique passives. Like Hell demons that always raging which gives increased damage stat, Nature demons that strikes back with thorns and regen with how tanky they are, and Sea monsters that debuff the enemy or have their passive effect triggered if we play spell cards and many more clans, which sounds great. We starts our run by choosing what clans we set for the Leader (main clan) and the Units (secondary clan). We already have our leader unit at the beginning of our run, to get more unit / spells from either the main or secondary clan that we choose.. we need to get it on the run. All sounds perfectly good, until you realized that the starting cards (excluding the leader unit card) always randomized for every starts of your run. Which means you would get lucky because that randomized card could works like wonder on your builds or remain almost useless in your deck for the rest of your run. If this game wanted to make every run is fresh and different, that is not how to do it!.
So let's talk a bit for the game combat, the combat have take place on a train with three floors including the fourth floor that have our 'core' which we should protected it from our enemies and we cannot place our units there but our 'core' could fight back.. well not recommended though. So the enemy starts from the bottom floor, and the enemy that is not defeated within a turn will always advancing up by 1 floor until you use a spell that prevents them from advancing floor or they have buff that could advance them for more than one floor. Now for you, each floor have 'capacity' and different units had their own 'capacity' value, if the floor capacity is maxed out then you can no more place another units and also YOUR UNITS CANNOT BE REPLACED / REMOVED WITHOUT ANY HELP FROM SPELLS. Now the combat goes with dueling your units base damage & health stat with the enemies stat, also note THE ENEMIES WILL ALWAYS ATTACK FIRST EXCEPT IF YOUR UNIT HAVE 'QUICK' AS THEIR PASSIVES. If the enemy unit does not die in a turn then they will advance a floor up and goes and on until the enemy got defeated or they reaced the 'core' floor. In the 'core' floor, the enemy will fight your 'core' which have their own attack stat & health stat, which is your train health stat and your run is over if it reached 0. The 'core' fights the enemy will fight as if it's your unit but the differences is it will go endlessly and only end their combat if either the enemy is defeated or the 'core' destroyed.
Everythings sounds okay if we're talking about the combat system. The problem of this game shows with a randomized starting cards and builds that only works specifically, meaning that not every upgrade is good with every clans leader / unit. If it works, it works so well it became so overpowered. You got that good feeling of crushing your enemy with powercrept. And if the build don't work well, the run is overwhelming.
Would I really recommend this game?
This game stat is not balanced quite nicely and it's better to play Slay The Spire instead in my opinion. But if you wanted to check this game out then yeah sure give it a go. It's honestly fun for a while, though the randomized is quite punishing unlike Slay The Spire. So my rating for this game is 7/10, would recommend if ONLY you've played Slay The Spire before.
