Abandoned by the developers in an unfinished state. It was just a quick cash-grab as we all assumed.

When this first came out it was buggy, but now it is a breath of fresh air compared to DD1.
There's so many quality of life changes compared to DD1:
- Individualised instanced loot but still can trade with others
- They have a rune system now which lets you customise char abilities/turrets
- mana given to chars at start of each round (instead of running around to get chests)
- Loot filter is a lot more accurate
- Level up a deck of heroes together
- Levelling and gear progression is fluid
- Armor is turret based stats and weapon is more dps based... so all chars can be dps & turret
- Transmog options for gear, pets, accessories, outfits etc

If you haven't played dungeon defenders 1 just play this instead unless you like a "classic feel" it's just less frustrating to navigate through than the 1st I'm sure it's great if you played it before but this one is just less annoying to play. Also less DLC and the ones this one does have are just cosmetic.

No BS review:
TLDR: DDA is better than DD1 in 2025
I hadn't played awakened since shortly after launch and originally I disliked the changes compared to DD1 but coming off the back of a 50 hours stint back into DD1 and then coming back to DDA shortly after in 2025, I can comfortably say DDA now in a significantly better state than DD1:
- There is almost no complexity or system missing anymore, in-fact there are some new ones
- All the heroes are slightly reworked to get rid of their annoying or useless traits from DD1
- Gear is way simpler to asses at a glance without loosing complexity
- Dont need a separate combat character (so far lvl 92 massacre survival wave 25 is smooth)
- Runes add new flavour to classes/abilities and towers and offer both a rewarding money sink and further progression
- No builder buff so you can run any hero you want without fear of less turret damage
- Performance and graphics are way better
I just hope people come back and try it so they can keep developing for DDA instead of DD1, the one thing its missing is more heroes so hopefully they can make more
