What if you got Pulstar, Blazing Star, R-Type, that oldschool 90s shmup DNA and mixed it with more frantic danmaku bullet hell elements to spice things up? And what if you did that while paying homage to the aesthetic of 80s anime space operas? You would get Wings of Bluestar.
Made by one person only, this beast of a game hits in all the right spots. Starts sweet and comfy and then progressively gets more and more intense as the levels and spectacular bosses give everything they've got with the trademark insane danmaku bullet patterns.
Sounds intimidating, but the game gives you the opportunity to earn a lot of credits through the scoring system, gives you multiple difficulty options and even let's you practice the stages you've beaten, letting you familiarize yourself with later stages without having to go through all Arcade mode again. Even in its intensity, Wings of Bluestar is still accessible (though you can easily ignore that and go oldschool raw if you prefer).
I must say though: 1CC in Normal will be a hard challenge, but if you're able to 1CC in Very Difficult, you're a god.
But the fun doesn't stop there. For those of you that live and breathe for shmup highscoring, the game has Risk scoring system where you can get an insane amount of points playing aggressively and mastering the use of the shield. Extremely risky, but also extremely rewarding and satisfying to pull off.
It's a game for those who want an accessible shmup, for those who want an oldschool shmup, for those that like danmaku and those who want to get crazy with the scoring system.
I deeply respect what Wings of Bluestar is, and even more considering it's made by one person only, something you can see in each stroke that goes into each sprite and background.

Imagine Blazing Star with an autofire option, hand-drawn assets, and (optional) twin-stick gameplay and you've got Wings of Bluestar.
Most importantly, the dev is passionate and listens to the fans! There's tons of unlockables and a fully fleshed-out story mode. This game was mostly a solo project (sans music), with a single dev not only writing the story and coding the game, but also creating all the art assets. This game is worth your money and time.

This game has no reason to drop frames as much as it does.
I've played many more demanding shmups without stutters or frame drops so this must be an optimization issue on the game's part
The game itself is just ok, only get it when it's on discount

A really fun horizontal shmup that reminded me a lot of R-Type and Pulstar. The hand drawn art is what separates it from the rest, and it's not just cutscenes- everything from your ship, to the backgrounds to the enemies are all hand drawn and look great.
As you progress you earn money which you can use to unlock gallery, sound test and boss rush. But most importantly you can buy more credits so you can keep going.
There's story mode, which includes a sort of visual novel game before getting into the shmupness. Not really my thing, although I do appreciate the artwork as well as an auto on to blast through the text.
Then there's arcade mode which is why we're all here.
But the more and more I was playing this game, I couldn't help but think that it would be incredible if the game would cater not just to shmup fans but also visual novel fans. For example, let's say you really like visual novel games but not interested in the shmup part... maybe add an option to make you near invincible and/or make the game a lot easier.
The achievements are done really well. There's 90 of them and while some require higher difficulty, many others do not.
Which brings me to difficulty. The game has Easy, Normal, Hard, and Super Hard. The most noticable change in difficulty are the enemies have suicide bullets on higher ones, while the bosses on hard and super hard they have too much health and felt spongey.
The first level of the game has a very R-Type feel to it- memorizing enemies, bullets, etc. Here i was really zoned in. I loved it. But shortly afterwards the game goes into bullet hell, as well as enemy hell. Even in the easy setting it's a bit too much for me. If the dev revamped the difficulties and also included a non-bullet hell option I think this game would really shine and open it up to a ton more players.
Combine this with the VN stuff I mentioned earlier and I think this could be a game that could cater to fans of 2 completely different genres from each other. Sounds crazy I know. It would take a lot of work sure, but I honestly think this game has the potential to do so.

Really cool shoot'em'up with hand drawn graphics.
I really like the story mode that adds a "visual novel" dimension to it (though i wish i could go explore the ship haha).
Gameplay is very solid with good scoring mechanics, bullet cancel, directional turrets, etc.
The level of challenge is high but for experienced shmup players it should be exactly what they want. For the others that are, like me, less skilled, you can use continues and also lower the difficulty!
I had played the demo from the festival and liked it, the rest of the game is even better...
Really recommend, it's fun and made with passion!

Summary:
Wings of Bluestar is a cool bullet-hell style horizontal shmup. It has a unique 2D manga/anime art style and lots of different game modes and content to unlock. Recommended!
Premise:
Playing as one of two pilots, each with their own ship with different weapons, the gamer must navigate a scrolling environment and defeat invading aliens by shooting them. A lot!
Presentation:
This game is nicely presented with lovely 2D hand-drawn artwork and with good VFX, sound and music. It ran well on my 1070 mobile with very occasional slow down.

I must admit I am more of a classic shmup fan (think e.g. R-Type / Gradius) than bullet-hell but I did very much enjoy playing this game once I focused on dodging more than shooting. There is a lot of content to enjoy here including a branching story mode, many art unlockables, training mode, boss rush and local co-op. The developer has obviously put a huge amount of time and effort into this game and continues to release patches / improvements etc such as twin-stick shooting mode which works great.
Congrats and two thumbs up!

We're currently in an era where the term 'indie' has been cynically misused by companies to sell products made by not-so-independent teams of developers. As a result, the standards required for true indies to get recognized have risen slowly over time, and the most valuable marketing technique of being able to say you're indie has been taken away. Wings of Bluestar is a real indie game. One person made everything here. It's got the gritty punk vibes you'd hope for from an indie game; rough around the edges but a singular cohesive vision.
Wings of Bluestar's biggest strength is how it handles player progression. The entire game-flow feels very much like a game from the console era pre-internet. There's an in-game shop that allows you to purchase numerous unlockables, such as additional credits, a boss rush mode, and an art gallery. There is traditional arcade gameplay in here, and anyone looking for a true shmup experience can do that right from the get-go. But if you just want to chill out and look at the cool hand-drawn artwork, you can play at your own pace knowing that even if you fail a run you're going to see some progress from it.
At the time of writing this, the game wasn't completely flawless from a technical perspective. I ran into numerous minor annoyances and bugs (mostly audio glitches). No game crashes, however, which is good. The dev appears to be listening to feedback and making changes accordingly, so if you're reading this in the future it's very likely that the game is in a much more stable condition.
The biggest addition I would hope for at this point in time is an online leaderboard to add replay value even after everything has been unlocked.

I'm having a lot of fun with this game and happy it turned out as well as it looked. The game and music reminds me a bit of Pulstar and Blazing Star on the Neo Geo, with a mix of more modern bullet hell elements. There are great quality of life extras that make practicing the harder levels and bosses less of a chore. It's pretty impressive it was all done by one person and I'm looking forward to giving it a review on my channel. Like any early release I've run into a few bugs here and there that I am sure will get ironed out, but I would recommend this game to anyone who appreciates a good presentation to their shmups, something missing in most of the modern releases. Support Indie devs please especially when they release something so clearly well done. -SJ
