A Game of Thrones: The Board Game is a grand digital rendition of political intrigue and strategic warfare across Westeros. It captures the essence of plotting alliances and maneuvers for the Iron Throne - especially rewarding when you’re negotiating with friends rather than with AI.
✅ Pros:
- The core strategy and depth of the tabletop version translate well: resources feel scarce, decisions matter, and diplomacy can tip the scales decisively.
- The tutorial clears the bar steep learning curve: great for getting started, especially if you're not a seasoned board gamer.
- The digital tools - calculating power, managing orders, hover tooltips - smooth out tedious bookkeeping and speed up play.
- Puzzle-like solo challenges are a smart inclusion, giving single-player fans a focused mini-game against clever setups.
- Multiplayer is presented (more follows)
⚖️ Neutral:
- The interface is large and a bit clunky - more workable than stylish, feeling like a tablet app trying to fit on a PC screen.
- Diplomacy is still the most engaging mechanic, yet the lack of voice chat or quick communication tools means full social interplay only shines when you're coordinating with pals outside the game.
- Matches, even online, can get held up by inactive players - there's no turn timer, so one AFK player can freeze the group.
❌ Cons:
- Multiplayer is based on Asmodee and the game is getting you a bad profile across all games using it because of bugs, not because you dropping games at your will
- The AI can play awkwardly: suboptimal moves, poor combat card choices, and missed opportunities are common and can feel laughably bad.
- Bugs persist: order skips, alignment glitches, and freezing mid-game sessions have all been reported many time but no fixes in almost 2 years now.
- The digital presentation lacks the grandeur of a physical board: visuals are serviceable but uninspired - maps and units feel flat, not immersive.
- Matchmaking is basic: finding balanced online games or full lobbies can take time, and games stall if someone drops or disappears.
This adaptation is a solid digital version of a beloved board game - best played with friends who relish betrayal and alliances. It saves you the setup time, remembers the rules, even shrinks a marathon session into something more manageable. But if you're hoping for a polished solo sandbox or a beautiful cinematic interface, it disappoints. It’s a grunt-level, strategic experience - for fans of political wargames who want to fight the wars without forgetting the rules.

Very buggy game. I am getting timed out almost every game, where AI then makes stupid decisions for you while you are timed out... after reconnecting there is bug that you cant press anything, but your timer is ticking. And its not my connection issue, as experienced it in different conditions. One such time out in a 'hot' moment of the game is ruining whole strategy. how can you mess up with such bugs in such a simple and low-requirement game.
Not recommending definitely. until bugs are fixed. but dont see it happening either way as game is not very popular also. Sometimes queing in the lobby for 20+ minutes

I played a LOT of the tabletop version, this is a great digital version that encapsulates the core gameplay very satisfyingly, the biggest issue is a lot of the fun of the game comes from Face to Face interaction a lot of that is lost here, but the trade off of a game not taking 6 hours is worth it.

get it on sale, great fun just like the physical board game which i also recommend. Bots can be a challenge on Hard but they don't cheat

Full of bugs, shame to the Steam's team, even if there are not a lot of players, better to take it down instead of having it running with so many problems!

I've only played for 11 hours, but felt compelled to post a review ASAP! Upon initially reading through the 22 brief sections outlined in the "Settings / Rules" tab, I was disappointed to read there were only 10 rounds per games, and more-so to find only 8 rounds in the "Challenges" game; seeming abnormally limited. Although the rules are short & to the point, they left me a little confused (as they should) having not actually played it yet. The 3 tutorials were quite helpful, despite the fact that I failed 4 times at the last one (dim-watt bulb, I know).
But having completed only one "Challenge" so far (and won it), I have an extremely positive appreciation for the complexity & nuances of this game, albeit I still don't thoroughly understand the Supplies component yet (whad-ya want for only 11 hours game time, much of it while watching a movie too).
I realize now that the 8/10 turn limit is inconsequential, as there are several sub-components in each round, and the limited number of only 3 of each action per round, force me to spend some time to really think out the deployment of actions, and calculate the few but deadly-important facets of a battle, and plan for the possible consequences of each phase of each turn.
It's definitely a "Board Game" design, and I really appreciate the fact that the game keeps track of all the hard-coded rules for me, helping me to avoid making stupid mistakes & wasting an action (like trying to consolidate a sea zone... duh!). Don't expect high pressure game-play (which I don't need in my life right now anyway), take your time, relax, and mull over the options intertwined in the phases... it DOES make a difference to plan out all phases in a round as a chain of events, and carefully consider how to use your "cards" at least a full round in advance. But most of all, remember, it's a board game for cryin' out loud! :::grins:::
I would give this 2 thumbs up if I could, and I'm very happy with this game!
