I'm not 100% what is going on in this game yet but I love it! It takes the feeling of creating an army of minions in MtG or Heartstone and puts it onto a grid based board that your character and summons traverse. This game rips, buy it!

What a wonderful weird game. Jump in and play. Uhmmm. It mentions a card battler, right? But there are no cards, you get a sword. And you can summon it. Yep. You can summon it, and get up towards floor number 100. But you can also descend from floor 100 back to 1? Why is that? And you gather minions while battling them on the floors. So this means you can make an army? Right? Right! I tried my own army and got my holy ass kicked that I immediately want back to my one army sword. What a wonderful strange game to dive in again. It is a bargain for the price you pay. Trust me, buy this game. Trust me, i am a doctor.

I've only just started playing, but I felt I had to give it a quick review right away: This game has... Fantastic depth to it. An excellent core "summoning" mechanic that separates it from most other standard Rogue-likes. A built-in save system. A chill & enjoyable OST. Monsters. Lots and lots and lots of Monsters. (That you can collect) TL;DR: This is fantastic, stands out from the pack, feels as good to play as Slay the Spire, and is very affordable.

Great game, has a lot of replay value and the soundtrack and visuals are charming as well. This game deserves more attention. It's easy to play but hard to master and has many different ways to play. If you like strategy, RPG, rouge-like or card battler games than this is something you should at the very least try.

While Ufflegrim touts itself as a "card-based" rogue-like, the card thing seems to be just an abstract description. You move your character about a series of levels going deeper into a well, fighting the creatures that live there and exploring the different biomes. The only stats are HP, creature type, and attack. It's really just basic addition and subtraction, but the creature types and effects do play a major part down the line. You start off with a sword "card"; after a while you earn "cards" of other well-entities and after a few levels you can ditch the stupid sword and use the not-stupid monsters. You can attack monsters by moving against them, though there's a chance you'll take damage equal to their attack if you don't maneuver around a corner or whatever. Attacking a monster earns you a random creature from the pool you construct between levels from the "cards" you earn after particular levels. The ones you earn from attacking go right into your inventory for that level - up to 10, and the inventory empties once you reach the end of the level. You can also construct your own level and buy alternate outfits for your character. Much sexy, very nice, all thrown down the well for you. You can summon whatever creatures you have gained from attacking enemies directly into the level, or you can turn creatures in your current inventory into buffs or special attacks by placing them atop creatures you've already summoned. Ufflegrim is by and far a rogue-like with a set of simple rules that combine to produce a level of complexity that's at once appealing and enjoyably challenging without being arbitrarily punishing. Dying on a level doesn't reset all of your progress - all it does is send you back to the in-between point immediately before that level. The graphics are adorable, with a construction paper cut-out aesthetic that makes it easy to tell different creatures apart. The OST is also nice, capturing the atmosphere of the game, setting the mood for the situation and giving Ufflegrim its own distinct flavor and mental feel. Once you reach the bottom of the well, you essentially reverse course, going up through much more challenging levels that require considerable thought regarding the makeup of your "card deck" - what monsters will work best as buffs, which ones sync well with each other in battle, etc. In short, you should get this game if you want something quick to learn yet possessing considerable replay value.

Barely even scratching the surface on this one, but I feel the need to give it a positive review since the depth of the mechanics and seemingly endless amount of synergies already have me looking forward to diving deeper into it. I'll probably go more in depth once I have a more proper grasp of the systems. Worth noting is this is not really a card game, so don't be fooled by it if you dislike them, however the way systems interact is clearly inspired by those. I did have some frustration with the monsters' AI, but despite this, I'm glad to have picked this up on sale and it's sad to see a game with so much potential go so unnoticed.

Ufflegrim is a unique take on turn based tactics, and i approve greatly. You play as more of a summoner, each creature you summon will fight and die for you. You can also play creatures on other creatures to make buffs. Drop effects and Place effects drive this game, and make many unique, and interesting synergies you can build decks around. Though you can attack things yourself, and attacking things is a way to pull creatures from your deck to summon, it's not your main source of damage, and doing so too often on a floor is likely to get you killed. Synergies are fun to explore. Decks are fun to create. Leading an army of creatures to destroy your foes? Sign me up. Game is really good. Really good. I suggest picking it up if you already like the genre, as it's ideas are fresh, and the game play is fun. If you are new to the genre, it's worth trying.
