An interesting sequel to Champion of the Gods. Give it a play, you might be pleasantly surprised.

As one of the first books from CoG for me, I played "Champion of the Gods" a forever ago (back when there were only 2 gender and 3 sexuality options for the MC, that's how long ago that was!). Liked it, despite it's quirks, a lot (I used to like Greek mythology as a child), had an established god-loving hero for my personal canon, gave the 1st book a replay for a save, so when this came out, I'd already freshened up on how the author's logic and the rules of the setting work, so a lot of the things that other players complained about, I wasn't surprised (or upset) by. That out of the way, the plot of this one was unexpected, but I ended up liking the adventure. It was interesting to see how rules that gods from a different pantheon impose in their realm work. The new companion (and potential love interest) was mildly annoying, mostly due to our different worldview, but we got along fine. I WAS, however, very upset that the MC got separated from their love from the 1st book for the duration of the quest. A single dream-date didn't help much. And with the new, younger chap being right there in my face and the game teasing me with a possibility to commit adultery. Thanks, but no thanks. Being a devoted follower of the gods gave me some funny moments in the foreign land while interacting with the locals. Especially the argument about
how having Destiny would have prevented the current crisis from happening.
The disgruntled reaction the MC got from these people was pure gold. Aww. All in all, I was glad to get back into this setting and see my hero again. Maybe most of my enjoyment stems from nostalgia, but I know that if the book itself wasn't worth at least one read, feeling nostalgic wouldn't have helped any.

What I least liked about it is that learning magic immediately sets you to rebelling against the gods. If the gods are going to keep sending me to these far-off lands to do their errands, they should at least allow me to learn how to teleport. That or have their pet messenger bird fly me places. That said, killing cultists abroad was good fun for my forty year-old king.

Even better than the first one. Big incentive to replay and try different paths. A true Greek Tragedy. EDIT: (implied spoilers) I replayed it, knowing now how things will unfold, I went for a less tragic outcome and am pleased to report that it exists! I'm glad though, that my first run ended in tragedy, for it gave me a huge incentive to replay. The game's been well worth it's money.

Le sigh... to think I wasted £3.63 on this nonsense; that's two & a half hours of my life I'll never get back. A word of warning to those thinking of playing this - the choices you make, whilst they may seem sensible at the time, can lead to outcomes VERY contrary to what you were hoping for... indeed, to reach a certain resolution, it may actually be in your best interests to choose the OPPOSITE of what you're really thinking. More than that, I can't really say without including major spoilers... however, I will say this much: Honesty is NOT always the best policy. Good luck. Edit: So. against my better judgement; or, perhaps simply because I wanted to at least TRY to get my money's worth out of this debacle, I forced myself to endure a second playthrough... And, while my overall feelings about the game remain unchanged, I find I can now be a bit more specific about just what my main issues were - as ever, I will try to avoid spoilers where possible. Note, this is less of a complaint about this game specifically, than it is a critique of the Choice of Games & other text-based adventures in general, as EotG shares many of the same flaws that have plagued other titles in this particular genre... For the sake of simplicity, I'll divide them into two main points- #1: The frankly infuriating ambiguity of some of the dialogue choices; or, more specifically, which ones are actually IMPORTANT, vs. those that are, for want of a better description, simply window dressing, effecting nothing more than maybe a few lines of text... #2: Related to the above, the game's almost criminal tendency to penalize or even outright PUNISH the player based on some throwaway decision, usually made several chapters earlier, long after the player has any means to alter or remedy the situation... This latter issue, in particular, is the reason why I reckon many of these games could sorely benefit from some form of checkpoint system; a rare few will, occasionally, give you the option of restarting your current chapter... Most of the time, however, should you find yourself dissatisfied with your playthrough, you are left with no other option but to start the whole thing over from scratch! In almost any other RPG, this would be completely unthinkable... who, in their right mind, would sink hours into, say, a Final Fantasy or a Bethesda game, only to have that game compromised by a single bad decision; THEN, be told that they had no choice but to start over from basically nothing..?! Obviously, these text adventures are nowhere NEAR that in-depth... however, the overall point still stands. Course, some would argue that, it is this very feature that lends these games much of their replayability, as well as supposedly making your choices more "meaningful"... As stated above, though, when you're being forced to use nothing more than sheer trial-&-error to find out WHICH choices actually matter, the whole thing, to my mind, becomes nothing but an exercise in frustration..! Also, on a more 'personal' note... Look, I know I said I was going to stay clear of spoilers; however, I feel this one is worth mentioning because of just HOW badly it managed to p*ss me off - read on at your own risk. Around halfway through the story, you get lumbered with a companion; one who's gender is based on player preference - in my playthrough, it was a women named "Doria"... Good golly goodness... How I HATED this character! Seriously, no word of lie - rarely, in ALL my days playing video games, have I felt such sheer animosity toward a fictional character... This woman/man/thing/whatever grated on my nerves worse than a thousand Ashleys..! Such was my growing hatred that I found myself praying - PRAYING - that I would have an opportunity to finally rid myself of this insufferable sow; alas, such a thing never came about, at least not on either of my playthroughs... What exactly the author was thinking when they decided to inflict this sanctimonious lump upon the player, I will never understand; my only reoccurring thought was "Is she SUPPOSED to be this irritating..?" If it actually WAS intentional, then, all credit to the author - if NOT, well... (Pro tip: If you're going to insist on turning your game into a glorified escort mission, then, please, at least make the companion/s TOLERABLE - rather than making me want to gouge my eyes out with a spoon..!) ...sigh - I digress. Incidentally - after all the headaches & thoughts of ocular mutilation - I was FINALLY able to get the ending I was after... however, the result was... "underwhelming", to say the least... Again, without going into spoiler territory, the whole thing ends on a rather unfulfilling cliffhanger that offers no real resolution to the tale... it's entirely possible the author may have deliberately intended to leave things open for a third installment; buuut, frankly, after all the hoops I was forced to jump though with this one - not LEAST of which was putting up with "you-know-who" (Seriously, f*ck Doria) - chances are, I won't be back!

Definitely worth your time if you're into choose your own adventure stories. I feel for the most complete experience you can transfer a save from the original Champion of the Gods into this new episode of the story and my version
(where I secretly betrayed the gods in the first episode to weaken them, and then suddenly betrayed them at their weakest hour. I felt like a supervillain waiting years for that moment)
has definitely been one of my favorite experiences playing a choice based game. The amount of variety and personality you can give your protagonist is astoundingly impressive. I made them a sly, yet noble villain by the end of my first playthrough and it was awesome.

I could not be happier that I made this purchase. 4 euro for this masterpiece? No way! I just finished my first ending and after two hours of reading.... I can say that my eyes are melting from the intense staring at my monitor. The story got me on the edge of my seat! If you're into DnD, tabletop games or Medieval Fantasy games, THIS IS FOR YOU. It's like reading a book that you are a part of. TWO DAMN HOURS FOR ONE ENDING??? I AM SO HAPPY I GOT THIS

I loved the first game and as soon as I found out there was a sequel, I bought it and was not disappointed. I liked having the option to export files from the prequel and continue with my characters.

I have to say Champion of the Gods is my favourite novel and I kind of always dreamed of what happened in the future, I became King (depending on my choices), now what? I stagnate or I continue exploring and having adventures? Exile of the Gods is the answer to that question, a sequel and you can also export your previous save files which is wonderful, continuing a story is always good and immersive. I like the thought of a New World with New Gods ... but I won't say much more than that, purchase the game its worth it.
