Game #33: Brood
This is an early access project abandoned since 2019.
It seems to be a very early alpha build meant to test movement, collision, and entity spawning.
There seems to be no tutorial, no explanation of controls, and no objectives. The achievements say something about "finding your way home", but I couldn't find a lot of gameplay after running a few laps around the forest. There are animals in the forest, but they don't attack you. There's an attack button, but you can't kill anything.
After messing around for half an hour, I was able to collect some skull items and eat some meat. I tried to make it to the floating islands, but they seem to be outside of the map.
Collision needs work. Invisible walls are everywhere, and running into them seems to make the fox suddenly go into the falling animation. Also there was the frequent problem of the camera going underneath the floor when running over bumpy terrain.
All 7 achievements are awarded at the start of a new game.
You cannot pause the game. Hitting Escape gives you a choice of "Quit" or "Restart".
Do I have anything positive to say? Well, yes! The fox itself isn't shabby! It can turn and veer and has a lot of personality to its animations. It seems to be a commissioned asset, and it's a decent one! I like the minimalist polygonal art style.
Also, the map itself isn't terrible. For being an empty abandoned sandbox game, this one looked pleasant and had some personality to it.
There was potential with this one! Unfortunately, there’s no actual game here. And so it joins the likes of Foxen Island in being a waste of time.
