My Beautiful Paper Smile is a really good horror, point and click game done by the same people that made my friend Raven, now then let's talk about the story. In an island Kingdom there is a magnificent and kind King who loves his subjects more than any other monarch, he governs and cares for his people and all he asked was their loyalty and help in achieving his dreams.
At least that's what the king and his brainwashed followers would have you believe, but the truth is the king is a cruel and despicable monarch who is only interested in power, subjugating and brainwashing his people while exterminating all that did not fit his idea of perfection, but one boy called a joyous vows to escape and bring down the tyrannical despot and free his land and his people.
Alright let’s talk about the likes, the graphics are really good and quite beautiful it's all hand drawn which gives the game its own unique charms and vibe, it sort of feels like a black and white horror version of Paper Mario with its designs, colors or lack thereof and scenery, it actually makes you just want to stop and stare at it all. The levels are good each one quite diverse with very interesting scenery and backgrounds to look at from a facility to a village to even the inside of a castle, each area was very unique and kept you from getting lost.
The story is very good I like how the boy just wanted to escape and be free with his friend, but soon he gets entangled into a bigger plot in freeing his people. The visual storytelling was also vary good as it showed just how messed up the whole world was with level design and background scenery.
The characters were very good I really like the boy as he was a great protagonist that you could sympathize with and enjoy as he overcomes difficult obstacles. The King was also good and a pretty great bad guy sadistic and cruel that just has this crazed and overpowering presence. The gameplay is good it's a simple point and click game gather some items and use them to solve some light puzzles, nothing too complicated.
The bosses of the game were for the most part okay each one had their own unique creepy designs; probably the best was the old man boss in chapter 2 definitely horrifying.
The atmosphere was good, nice and spooky as you wander and explore this cursed land and dread a bit on what might happen next.
The soundtrack was good fitted the game very well, the voice acting was very good although we only get one voice acting scene with the king in at the end of chapter 3, it definitely was well acted and the voice fits the king very well capturing both his cruelty and scariness in equal parts. Now is the game scary kind of yes kind of no, it does have some scary parts, but that's mostly from well placed jumpscares, the whole thing is more disturbing with gruesome visuals and just the depressive atmosphere of it all.
Alright let’s talk about the dislikes, there are some annoying parts in the game like chapter 3 for the most part it kind of sucked with its forced stealth segments and getting some of the beakers the collectibles, you see each level you can collect three items that unlocks extra story and in chapter 3 you have to collect beakers.
The problem is that one of the beakers is really hard to pick up you see you're in this line of boys and you have to run to the beaker before the guards capture you, but like I said the beaker is hard to pick up I kept clicking it but it wouldn't work and I kept getting captured luckily I was able to get that beaker it just took longer than necessary. The boss in that chapter also kind of sucked I mean I know you're supposed to hit a breaker to flood the room with light and to kill the boss, but I felt it pretty hard and that last segment where you have to hit the glitching switch I don't know the whole thing just kind of sucks.
The final boss the king could be a bit annoying especially when in his second phase where he summoning his guards and he has a laser attack, also if you die in his second or third form you have to start the boss fight from the beginning, the whole thing felt a bit cheap sometimes.
Okay now that I said that My Beautiful Paper Smile is a really good horror, point and click game done by the same people that made my friend Raven, with its really good graphics, very good story and very good characters, I highly recommend playing this game it just feels very unique with its overall style and presentation.
