this was fun. great atmosphere, nice little spooky moments, i had a lot of fun. the only part of the game i didn't like was one that required good reaction time, which i do not possess lol. but overall, i liked it.

That was, ummm.... not good, by any stretch of the imagination. This feels like a very shoddy and incomplete tech demo at best. The short gif that is shown of you running away from a thing down a dark hallway is about the only real gameplay that is available. Other than that, you run around a "hotel" from "floor to floor" (they are almost 100% identical) and run into things until it triggers the elevator to start working again. There are a ton of really cheap jump scares as well as a bunch of pointlessly flashing lights everywhere, but nothing really hurts you. The control scheme for a controller is atrocious, especially on the menus. Like I said before, other than that hallway scene, there is no threat of death (at least that I found), so it's basically a really bad walking simulator with garbagey noises playing in the background. I wouldn't even recommend buying this at $0.10, let alone its current $0.99 price tag. Honestly, I try to give games the benefit of the doubt, but this one is just BAD. DO NOT BUY!

"Oh, I forgot I have this game in my library. Well, it's a cheap game and it's not bad either, but do I recommend it? eh maybe."
It's a short, basic 2D horror adventure.
If I could, I'd give it a neutral review, but you know the Steam system. I'd recommend it only barely, if you're curious about it. An epilepsy warning: there's some flashing lights and screens in the game, as well as several jump scares.
Bare-bones story
Background story is about a guy escaping a haunted hotel. Then weird stuff happens, like ghastly shapes appearing, ominous sounds, and red-glowing pentagrams. Otherwise the storyline is very simple: stuff happens without explanation (spooky) and you react to it, all the way trying to get out of the hotel. Being a paranormal investigator, you don't actually have much anything to investigate or solve, which is a shame. Even all the floors look rather similar, save for a few details, so exploration loses its appeal after a couple floors. And there's no aftermath, peculiar or otherwise, when the story's over.
Is it scary?
The atmosphere is creepy alright. There's a few jump scares, that might be startling, but I didn't find the game very scary or chilling.
Technical stuff
You can't remap the keys. On keyboard they're WASD or arrows. On gamepad the main menu controls are unconventional: with Xbox controller, the menu is navigated with 'Y','A','X' and 'B'. Of course it works but it's odd when almost every other game just uses D-pad or analog stick. In-game controls with the usual analog stick. Sounds and/or music cannot be turned off or affected separately with the in-game volume controls, though for a horror game I'd argue both are important to have for the atmosphere.
Brief spook experience
My playthrough (with a few deaths) was about 30 minutes. Initially there wasn't a save system, so it includes a few run-throughs after a few clumsy deaths. A particularly hurried player might do it in half my time. A special commendation for the developer: they are incredibly friendly and receptive to feedback. E.g. dev added an autosave system in a day's notice. The ingredients for a horror title are there, though the result is a mixed bag. The price is about right, as long as you know not to expect much. As far as I know, it is the first horror game by this developer, so there's room to improve. ~Twistorian Curator~

Wow! I was really sketchy about trying this out. But with the Steam summer sale in full swing, I grabbed it for 45% off. :) It was a little frustrating at first because I thought the volume control working in game but it only seems to work in the menu. No big deal. The graphics, effects, and music are all reminiscent of many of my favorite Indie horror games. Solid. The game is very short. I had a lot of trouble on an area near the end where you need to run between some boxes. My coordination isn't great so it took me forever to get through this spot. Even so, the game was finished in 24 minutes. So in summation: Very short game at less than 30 minutes but still fun. It's really simple in that you all you need to do is wander around to complete the game. There isn't a lot of story, but what is there gives enough of a picture to understand what's going on. Replay value isn't great. You can get all the achievements in one playthrough and once you've seen the game there isn't much reason to play it more than a couple times. I feel like I got $0.54 worth of fun for sure. Thanks :)

Well, this is awful. Even if you will get it for free, nothing will compensate the 10 minutes of your life that was spent in vain. Where should I start? The art-style is not the main problem of "The Chills" - it would be even fun if someone will make a fun trashy horror game with such graphics, using sound and level design as a tool to create an absurdist atmosphere. This is not the case. This is a walking simulator that consist of one small map that is duplicated five times, with a couple of "narrow corridor" maps added. Five same maps are five "floors" of the hotel, the only real thing that changes is the doors (that can be opened or closed). You have to get from the fifth floor to the bottom of the building using the elevator, stopping at the every floor, running in circles around the same maps to see where you need to go now and continously facepalming on every cringy jumpscare that this "game" throws on you. See one of the jumpscares in a trailer - the in-game versions are equally cringeworthy. Our hero can't attack or even run faster. Almost all the "enemies" we encounter are nothing more than cheap screamers that can't harm out avatar - there is no healthbar at all! At the same time, there is a place in the game where you have to "Run left!" from the same enemy that never hurts you in other parts of the hotel - meeting him is an instant "game over" that makes you start everything from the beginning. The same story with the last part of the game - technically you can finish "The Chills" less then in 10 minutes, but if you'll make a mistake in that last running part where everything tries to kill you, you have to start from the beginning: no savepoints anywhere! I'm surprised that the author of "The Chills" is trying to sell THIS for a real money. Even 0.01$ is too much for a program that was made in "GameMaker: Studio" engine without any real effort. Refund.
