EXODUS: THE RISE OF CHAOS Review - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaPb9PmLe6g
Developed by Matheus Vinicius, Exodus the Rise of Chaos is an early-access dark psychological indie horror game in which your worst enemy resembles the inner manifestations of your mind.
Following a nightmarish apocalyptic event whereby humanity has been decimated by a catastrophic solar eruption, your primary objectives are to discover the source of humanity's supposed extinction. Meanwhile, battling a disturbing series of internal demons as a dizzying descent into madness takes a stranglehold of your sanity.
Awakening in an abandoned building, you look around to see strange scribblings inscribed on the surrounding walls. As you progress, however, you'll learn of the ever-looming doomsday state of emergency while solving relatively simplistic puzzles such as locating keys and discovering concealed levers, thereby unlocking unexplored areas in a procedural sense.
Meanwhile, survival elements play a significant part, too. For instance, at one stage, I acquired a torch, which I found virtually an essential tool for discovering items and highlighting solutions. But in a strict survival style, you must manage battery reserves stashed away in short supply within the various drawers and cupboards, leading to one or two tensely thrilling moments as reserves slowly deplete while searching for an escape route.
Elsewhere, one curious riddle involving a creepy-looking mural led to a chillingly impactful jumpscare. While some scenes of dizzying amnesia even visibly disturbed my senses at times - enough to keep my nerves poised delicately on tenterhooks. Along the way, odd liminal spaces and sudden shocks add to the creeping sense of apprehension.
While the game generally delivers decent graphics overall, setting an unsettling mood and immersive atmosphere, occasionally, the brightness levels can appear especially dim, making it difficult to confront and explore dark spaces, not least when the battery life has fully depleted.
Nonetheless, Exodus delivers some smartly devised jump scares, and aside from a few issues concerning control intuitiveness, expect at least one or two bone-chilling thrills guaranteed to summon shivers. To sum up, I recommend psychological survival horror fans give Rise of Chaos a go!
