Fantastic game.
Some of the later scenarios were in my opinion pretty difficult but nothing too demanding.
I quite liked the fragmented story. One thing I was less a fan of was going back to previous scenarios to check up on details. All in all an amazing experience. Now I am ready for the DLC :-)

A good sequel to a fantastic game. Definitely worth playing if one enjoyed the first one.
All in all a bit shorter and more tricky

The main plot is more sporadic and wacky than the first, with a great many intermingling subplots throughout a wide stretch of time. I have to say I much prefer the more contained and easy to follow story of the first game, which did initially present as this game did, with intermingling plots, but coalesced into a single story as a few plot twists and secrets were revealed. That isn't to say the story is bad, just harder to follow, and I do appreciate the insight into several of the world's politics, religions, and technologies. The story of each DLC was fantastic, featuring a more contained plot similar to the first, shorter, yet containing a few twists each. The final DLC culminates in a beautiful yet twisted (in golden idol fashion) ending for one of the previous game's more sympathetic characters, which I found really nice.
The music follows shortly after the story as the best parts of both games, each region, episode, and even screen has a wonderfully produced soundscape. It is hard to say which one song I like the most, maybe one of the songs found the main story, for the episode selection in a later act for the prophetic era of the sentinels of lemuria.
I was initially put off the art style, I much preferred the art style of the first. That being said I also avoided the first for it's wacky looking art and it wasn't until I gave it a try and came to love the story that I came to this one wanting more. Just like the first game I came to quite like the art in this one and also like the first I think the artist found their stride in the DLC with the greater pieces being found therein.
The gameplay was excellent, a more difficult twist from the first game and the UI was much improved. I did like the menuing more in the first game though, but the more artistic display is appreciated. In a way the presentation of the episodes while menuing match the scattered feel of the main story.
In a way it fails to live up to the standard set by the first game, but in others it matches or vastly exceeds them. It's easy to recommend the game, and if you loved the first game it would be a huge mistake to miss this one. All things considered it is an outstanding sequel, especially if you get the DLC.

this is a very specific type of puzzle game, and it wears that on its sleeve. if you don't think it's your thing, it probably isn't. but if you think it might be, I had a great time with my partners searching through all the scenes and bickering over what some insignificant detail meant. there were occasional moments where the logic *felt* obtuse, but anytime we looked back at it after brute forcing something we would have that moment of "ohhhhh *that's* what that detail meant". there was never really anything that felt unfair. there's no timer and no penalties for being wrong which I always love.
this all goes for the previous game as well, and having completed the previous game did give us some useful hints for certain sections of this game, so I would recommend playing both. there is more Classic Murder in the first game, and more spiritual esoterica in this one. it's definitely not a game mechanic that's for everyone, but I enjoyed them both very much, including all the dlc for both.

It's more Golden Idol! Personally, I found that, about halfway through the game, I was kind of over the mechanics of this series. There are a bunch of moments where you can make true statements in the event screen that aren't what the game is looking for, which is really frustrating. However, I do still wholly recommend both this and the first game. They're some of the best modern detective/puzzle games out there. Rise isn't doing anything super innovative, though.

I feel like they threw out all the intelligent and meaningful design choices that made Case of the Golden Idol the masterpiece that it was. The new UI has a ton of unnecessary clutter, the new UX is annoying to navigate, there's a lot of "hand-holding" and back-patting whenever you do something successfully (feels really infantilizing), the writing feels more elementary and has less plot momentum, and the soundtrack feels a lot more stale. The pixel art style in the previous version was charming, but I wouldn't mind parting from it if everything else weren't so egregious.
If you appreciated the original because of its intelligent and careful craftsmanship, this is not the game for you. If you found the original to be too hard and want it more disney-fied, you might enjoy this more. I personally could not stomach to finish it.

Excellent detective game, a worthy sequel. I still can't get enough of this weird and goofy world!
Also great to play simultaneously with a friend or spouse and then talk it over.

The base game for Rise is not as good as the Case. The scenarios tend to be shorter, and you often have to jump between scenarios to find clues or info, and there's a bit of a delay in doing that. It ends up being very bothersome. The plot is also... all over the place? It's less murder mystery and more Scooby Doo mystery... or Three Stooges comedy...
The DLC for this is much better, it still does the jumping around thing, but the plot is much tighter.

Absolute Cinema. I just wish it didn't force you out of a scenario once complete. The first game let you stay in the scenario to look around, until you felt like moving on.

It's a bit harder than the original, since the jumping around the timeline and bigger character roster requires a bit more focus, but it's extremely worth the investment, they don't miss. DLCs are also amazing, and easier to focus on one by one.
