A simple, not too difficult game with a fun gameplay loop and lots of little achievements to get, seemed to have really sucked me into it, although it definitely could do with some weapon combos, or some other sillyness, as the weapons are very basic and lack the sillyness that they might need.
Though it's no perfect, a lot of weapons truly are useless, or at the very least much less good than others. For the weapons that fire in your facing direction, it would be amazing to have the second stick control direction of facing instead of also moving, same with you could use that to determine where you throw out grenades, I think it would make a lot of crappy weapons very useful and worthwhile.
Not a huge amount of variety to the game, but that doesn't matter. It's a full game that doesn't demand you keep paying money or an unattainable computer, while looking good and playing good.

Very fun roguelike but I personally feel like it needs a bit more work to live up to DRG standards. The game is VERY grindy in the later stages, and there aren't many artifacts to make each run feel unique. I found myself picking the same upgrades time after time rather than trying to diversify my builds. I think it's a very fair asking price for what you're getting, but again, when you compare it to the main DRG game, it has a lot to live up to. Still recommend.

The first Version of this in early acess was alright and quite fun.
But this kind of game does not need complexity and they added a lot of it.
It used to be you selecting a stage and character with a starting weapon, 5 levels deeps, then a boss and thats it.
It was not too involved but fun. For a while. Thats what i liked about these survivor style games. You dont need much time or brain power and you can just complete them over time.
Now they added
a very different mode where you escort instead of fighting a boss.
Contracts which upgrade one of oh so many weapons by 1% damage or whatever, up to 5 times. These are annoying to grind for me these games are about completion. You also need the percentages for higher difficulties.
Plus there are some extra dangerous runs with modifiers. They are very different. If you want that good for you. I just cant be bothered.
PLUS your character can wear items with somewhat random bonuses. Those are too much.
Game literally got too complicated to be my 'just 20 minutes of gaming- heads off' go to title.
Of course you might enjoy all these features. I did not.

This isn't a deep rock galactic game, this is a survivor-like game from a different developer. Most of the reviews seem to be from people that just purely don't enjoy this genre of game, and I assume, only bought it for the title.
Honestly found this incredibly fun and a unique take on the survivor-like genre. Having 2 different game modes is incredibly fun and I found this to be quite challenging and rewarding. Having separate missions to give a perm boost to the different weapons, classes, etc. is also a very fun unique twist to it.
Not to mention, only being about $8 in bundles (during sale) this was an easy immediate purchase.. Only thing I dislike is the weird addition of skins in a couple of microtransactions.

I've played a bunch of the regular DRG and decided to pick this up for Christmas to play on my steam deck. I've put 52 hours into this game in the last week since I've been off and even been playing it with a controller on my gaming pc, not just my steam deck. This game is fun.
Well, I went to play the game on my pc this morning and get a message that basically says, "Your save file is corrupt. We tried to save it but failed. Sorry!"
Apparently this is a common issue with this game and the devs have not fixed it. Then the game syncs the corrupt save back up to the Steam Cloud before you can do anything. I thought I could get onto my steam deck and re-upload the save, but it also immediately redownloaded the corrupt save that was reset to level 1. I've been trying all morning to get this save recovered, but the game just wants to complain about corrupted saves each time.
This is pretty irritating and somewhat demoralizing since I had most of the weapon masteries done and all of the biome masteries. I cannot recommend supporting developers that have such basic crippling issues in their game, especially since I'm going to have to grind all of that again if I want to get the rest of the achievements which require all of the other unlocks to get back to that level.
And what if it corrupts again and wipes my progress again in another 50 hours? Seriously, this is ridiculous. Do better Devs.

Bought this game not expecting much, being already into DRG and looking for something to waste time grinding on. I was pleasantly surprised! I must say, for a Survivor game, you don't become overpowered nearly as often as you'd expect, I hit a pretty hard peak between unlocking HAZ4 and HAZ5 where I would lose a lot of games by a hair, difficulty eased up a lot after unlocking gear and meta upgrades. but for a moment no matter how ideal my runs were and how OP I felt, it could all go to shit because of a careless or greedy decision. That was enjoyable though, the moments where you have to choose whether you should push a little further, or save your skin.
The weapons are fun, and although a bunch of categories are samey (drones and beams namely), the fun part is overclock that let you change the weapons behavior, ideally to fit your build.
Just any weapon or build doesn't do the trick, hard to use a front firing miningun or shotgun when you're constantly forced to kite enemies.
I would say my biggest gripe comes from the huge gap in strength between different artifacts. They range from small bonuses, utilitary upgrades, to immense boosts in power. They all have their place at some point in the game but some are just so good you'd rather take them over one that would fit in your current niche.
The classes are also pretty similar except for a few that have you lean into one playstyle from the getgo while other let you build more freely. The focus is not really on the dwarf as much as on all their associated weapons.
The gear system is not super engaging, I found myself using the "equip best gear" button 95% of the time. But if you bother looking at them they do have significant effects, although not presented in the most digestible way.
The biomes are nice and distinct from each other, either because of the environment or the mobs that inhabit them. (Love the Salt Caves' stalagmites, the Q'ronar filling up my screen not so much LOL)
I've been writing a lot so in summary...
It's a good DRG game and a competent Survivor like. It feels on the hard side for the genre, less opportunities to be powerful and close calls for survival, manipulating the terrain makes kiting mobs more engaging. The synergies are there although not as flashy as you'd expect, the real variety stands in the overclocks unlocked every 6 weapon levels (especially the third and last one)
Maybe it lacks the dopamine overload factor and absolutely unhinged nature of most Survivor games, but just like the original DRG, the gameplay is solidly built and keeps me satisfied.
Also I'm impressed with how many enemies can be on screen at once! If there's one thing that's overkill, it's their number! The game runs fluid anyways.
I recommend it if you're into DRG, you'll enjoy the nods and gameplay translation.
The game still stands on its own as a fine Survivor-like, but it takes a little while to get going.
Rock and Stone!

It's not offensively bad but it doesn't understand what makes the genre fun. Repetition in roguelikes works because of variance between each run. You can try different builds, see new items and abilities, and make different decisions. Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor has extracted all the run-to-run variance into its massively over-engineered and grindy metagame progression system. It's quite telling that to start your first run, you have to click through about 6 screens showing you all the different modes and characters you can pick once you grind enough.
The upgrades have little effect on gameplay, and are mostly marginal stat increases. There's very little build-craft here, you're just increasing damage. The guns mostly feel the same, there's little synergy going on other than picking guns with the same damage types. Maybe this gets better once you grind enough and allow more upgrades to appear in a run, but I don't have the willingness to keep playing to find out.

This is not an entirely bad game, but it’s a bad survivors-like game. The combination with a mining game is refreshing at first, something that I miss in the monotone locations of other games from this genre, but the survivors mechanics are undoubtedly too inferior compared to other games in the genre and definitely below par. Boring and unrewarding flat meta upgrades (like +1% damage / fire rate / reload speed). No synergies between weapon or run upgrades, no game-changing upgrades. Many similar weapons. Unlocks seem unrewarding. Character and weapon attributes are not described; there are no tooltips.
The gameplay loop is interesting for the first few runs due to the mining mechanics and multiple levels/maps and their goals, but it quickly turns into an unrewarding grind. I love bullet-hell/survivors games with interesting and satisfying meta upgrades and in-run synergies that let you build distinct and maybe overpowered builds with meaningful meta progression. There are many good bullet-hell/survivors games, for example Yet Another Zombie Survivors. This is not one of them.
I guess the selling point here, and the reason for the high Steam scores, is the Deep Rock Galactic setting. If you are not a huge fan of the Deep Rock Galactic game and just want a good bullet-hell/survivors game, look elsewhere.
Brilliant Twist on the DRG Formula
The game took me by surprise. I went in thinking this would be a side project, but what I found was a tight, exciting survival shooter that stands on its own. The core gunplay from Deep Rock Galactic works beautifully in this new survival mode. You still feel powerful and weighty with every shot, and the enemies have that same satisfying mix of chaos and danger that made the original so much fun.
The moment to moment gameplay is intense and rewarding. Waves of enemies come at you fast and hard and you have to think on your feet. I liked how each class feels distinct and useful. Some make it easier to control crowds, others let you survive longer bursts of fire. I ended up switching classes between runs not just for fun but because each one really changes how you approach the game. That kind of depth keeps things fresh even after multiple hours.
The world still feels alive and unpredictable. The way the environments shift and the pacing builds tension is something I have always loved about Deep Rock Galactic and Survivor brings that into a survival genre really well. There is always that thrill of barely making it through a wave, or turning the fight back in your favor after being surrounded.
Visually it stays true to the style players love. The enemies look great, the explosions feel satisfying, and overall the presentation never gets in the way of the action. I did not run into major bugs or performance issues and it felt stable during long sessions.
Final Thoughts
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor takes everything that is great about Deep Rock Galactic and gives it a fresh survival twist. It is intense, rewarding, and constantly keeps you engaged whether you are playing alone or with friends. If you enjoyed the original and want a tougher challenge with a survival bent, this is absolutely worth your time.
